Development of a Large-Area, High-Energy-Density Composite Electrode-Based Supercapacitor
Project no. 25281 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023
Summary

Technological advancements worldwide highlight the importance of energy storage as much as energy production. Supercapacitors, with their high power density and charge-discharge cycle numbers, offer an alternative to commercially viable batteries in many forms. Pseudocapacitors (PsCs), a subtype of supercapacitor, can provide high energy density thanks to their battery-like operating principles. Due to the redox reactions occurring in the electrodes of PsCs, it is necessary to use materials with high electrochemical stability and to increase the charge-discharge cycle numbers of the electrodes. This will overcome a significant obstacle in the commercialization process of PsC devices. In this project, 3-dimensional (3D) graphene (reduced graphene oxide - RGO) aerogel and composite-based electrodes with highly electrochemically stable phthalocyanine derivatives will be prepared, and PsC devices will be manufactured. For this purpose,

Phthalocyanine (Pc) derivatives with different redox activities will be synthesized,

3D RGO aerogel-phthalocyanine composite electrodes (1*1 cm2) will be prepared using these compounds,

PsC devices will be prepared with electrode materials and their electrochemical characterization will be performed to determine the ideal device structure.

Subsequently, supercapacitor devices with a large area (5*5 cm2) will be prepared with optimized structures and their electrical characterization will be performed to optimize the production process.

In the project, it is planned to synthesize 3 different series of phthalocyanine derivatives that are expected to have different photophysical and redox activities. The Pc derivatives classified as the A series will contain non-ionic, long-chain imidazole groups and different metal atoms in the peripheral position. Series B will contain ionic imidazolium iodide substituents, while Series C will consist of peripherally substituent-free Pc derivatives to investigate the effect of substituent interaction on device performance. Furthermore, to investigate the effect of metal interaction on device performance, Pc derivatives containing 5 different metals [Cu, Co, Fe, Ni (redox active) and Zn (redox inactive)] with different redox activities are planned, resulting in a total of 18 derivatives to be synthesized. The unique value of the project lies in the fact that the presented Pc derivatives with different substituents will be used for the first time in PsC applications as aerogel composites and that a large-area device will be prepared. The project directly contributes to the field of Chemistry within the framework of the 11th Development Plan.
