Determination of Chemical Composition and Biological Activities of Garlic Grown in Different Regions in Türkiye
Project no. 29638 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023
Summary

Garlic is a plant cultivated in many provinces of Turkey and widely used as a food. Environmental and plant-specific factors cause changes in the plant's chemical composition. As part of the project, the organosulfur contents of garlic grown in the diverse climatic provinces of Kastamonu, Balıkesir, Edirne, and Aksaray in Turkey were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-CS) at different temperatures (room temperature, 50, and 90°C). Eight compounds, namely Diallyl disulfide, (Z)-1-Allyl-2-(prop-1-en-1-yl)disulfane, 3H-1,2-Dithiole, Methyl 2-propenyl trisulfide, 3-Vinyl-4H-1,2-dithiine, Diallyl trisulfide, 2-Vinyl-4H-1,3-dithiine and dibutylhydroxytoluene (BHT), were detected in the extracts and the dominant compounds were 3-Vinyl-4H-1,2-dithiine and 2-Vinyl-4H-1,3-dithiine. In addition, it was aimed to determine the effects of these extracts on prostate cancer. For this purpose, the effects of the extracts on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and LNCaP, DU145 and PC3 cell lines were evaluated using MTT assays. No activity was observed in samples prepared at 50 and 90 °C, while cytotoxic activity was detected in samples prepared at room temperature. The most significant activity was recorded against LNCaP cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 23.91 to 48.84 µg/ml.
