REMOVAL OF PHOSPHATE FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS WITH CLASSIC ANION EXCHANGER and SHALLOW SHELL RESIN

Project no. 23459 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021

Summary

In this study, the performance of phophate (PO43-) removal from aqueous solutions was investigated using a conventional anion exchange resin (Purolite A500 plus) and shallow Shell anion exchange resin (Purolite SSTA63). The resins were conditioned with NaOH and converted to OH form before being used in the experiments. Batch studies were performed to investigate the effects of sorbent dose and initial solution pH on PO43- removal. In addition, the mechanism of PO43- removal and the reaction mechanism were determined using sorption isotherms and kinetic models. Phosphate analyzes were performed spectrometrically using the malachite green method. The experiments with the ion exchange resins showed that the optimum resin dose for the removal of PO43- was 0.025 g for both resins and the working pH range was 4 - 8. The kinetic studies showed that the ion exchange kinetics of the resins were fast and ion exchange resins removed more than 95% of PO43- within 120 minutes. The results of the equilibrium studies showed that the removal of PO43- was consistent with the Langmiur isotherm model. Thermodynamic studies with anion exchange resins have shown that the removal of PO43- is exothermic and spontaneous (?G < 0). Regeneration studies have shown that resins loaded with phosphate can be regenerated with 0.5 HCl or H2SO4. Keywords: Anion exchange resin, Phosphate, Ion exchange, Water treatment,
