Production of Thermoplastic Starch and Poly(Butylene AdipatcoTerephthalate) Based Active Packaging Film, Determination of Usability and Biodegradability in Minimal Processed Food Products

Project no. 23428 · Status: Kapanmış · 2022

Summary

In this study, the production of thermoplastic starch and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) biobased active films was carried out by extrusion method, and the effects on food shelf life were determined along with the determination of film properties. In the first step of the study, which was carried out in 4 stages, the production of thermoplastic starch was carried out. In line with the results determined by preliminary experiments, an extrusion temperature of 135±5 °C and 30% glycerol concentration were used. In the second step, production conditions were determined by mixing thermoplastic starch (90-60%), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) in varying ratios (10-40%), selected active ingredients such as grape seed oil (0.5-4%), alpha-tocopherol (0.5-4%), and rice husk (1-5%) with the aim of determining optimum parameters using response surface methodology for optimization. In the third stage, the optimum and control films produced as a result of the optimization were evaluated by applying physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, barrier, and biodegradability tests. It was concluded that, especially in the films in which grape seed oil was used as the active ingredient, an approximately 8-times increase in tensile strength was achieved, resulting in a film with higher strength compared to the control. In the films in which rice husk was used as the active ingredient, it was determined that this production method could not produce a film wide enough to be suitable for food packaging and was not included in the food application analysis. In the final stage, the produced films were used in the packaging of minimally processed arugula samples. Physical, chemical, microbiological and sensory analyses were performed and the results were evaluated during the 14-day storage period. It has been determined that active films containing grape seed oil have the best properties during storage. Films containing alpha-tocopherol were also determined to be more effective on minimally treated arugula compared to control films. It was concluded that grape seed oil and alpha-tocopherol have the potential for use in the production of active biobased packaging films.
