Evaluation of the Effects of Different Maxillary Expansion Appliances Used in Unilateral Crossbite Cases Using Finite Element Analysis

Summary

Unilateral narrowing of the maxillary bone and the resulting unilateral crossbite are frequently observed in orthodontic cases and present a challenging scenario in terms of treatment options. In our study, effective treatment methods will be identified and compared using scenarios prepared with different appliance types created using the finite element analysis method.

Finite element analysis is an application developed to find analytical solutions to problems involving complex geometries, based on simplifying these geometries by dividing them into small elements.

In our study, four different scenarios will be created using mini-screw-supported and conventional expansion appliances, along with surgical incisions, to minimise negative effects such as tooth rotation and unwanted expansion on the healthy side of the maxilla and to achieve expansion on the narrow side. The stress values on the teeth and bones will then be examined. Thus, the most appropriate appliance and application method will be determined, and procedures that are difficult to apply and test on patients in clinical cases will be simulated using the finite element analysis method. While the literature primarily focuses on research related to bilateral maxillary narrowing and rapid maxillary expansion treatments, this study aims to identify current mini-screw-supported appliance types and surgical procedures that can be applied in cases requiring unilateral expansion.
