Summary

Benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (RE) is the most common focal epilepsy

syndrome of childhood. The lifetime seizure frequency is less than 5 in 90% of children with RE. RE

was first defined as benign epilepsy due to the low frequency/number of seizures. However, as a result of the long-term nature of epileptic syndrome, neuropsychological effects are common, especially negative effects in language, cognitive, memory, and attention areas, so the term benign prognosis is no longer used. Recent studies have also found abnormalities in brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analyzes of patients with RE. The relationship between imaging analyzes and neuropsychiatric tests was examined in these patients and it was found that they showed lower performance in all areas. Hypotheses have been put forward that the left hemisphere is more prone to adverse effects and its relationship with speech dysfunction. A group of 26 children aged 7-13 years, who were followed up with the diagnosis of benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes in Ege University Faculty of Medicine Pediatric Neurology Outpatient Clinic, and 24 healthy children with age and gender distribution compatible, who did not have seizures/no epilepsy, had normal neurological examinations, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), was evaluated. In this study, it was aimed to compare the demographic characteristics, EEG findings, DTI findings, psychiatric examination and psychometric tests correlation of patients diagnosed with benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes according to the latest epilepsy classification of ILAE, and comparison with healthy control group.
