OBTAINING FIBER FROM BANANA PLANT WASTE BY DIFFERENT METHODS AND EXAMINING ITS POTENTIAL USE IN TEXTILE

Project no. 22328 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021

Summary

Considering the decreasing oil resources day by day, the use of natural materials that renew themselves every year becomes environmentally, economically and socially advantageous. The textile industry, like many other industries, is in search of solutions that support sustainability in raw material selection and production methods. This has led to a rise in the market need for sustainable fibers and generated a strong demand for natural fibers.

Agricultural wastes, which arise after production and are one of today's most important problems, are also being investigated for their potential industrial applications as a sustainable material category. Banana plant, which is a type of plant that is generally grown for its fruit, becomes waste after its fruit is collected, and the disposal of this waste poses a big problem. However, after proper extraction and processing from these banana pseudo-stems, fiber that can be used in textile products can be obtained and used in textiles.

Although banana fibers have much potential in terms of functionality and applications, they are not well recognized and underutilized. However, there is widespread use potential for many products.

For this reason, the project is aimed to examine the possibilities of obtaining fiber and using it in textiles. based on the waste produced by the banana plant grown for its fruit in the Mediterranean region, especially in Alanya and its surroundings. After the fibers were obtained using retting and mechanical methods. The microscopic examinations were made for the chemical and physical characterization of the fibers in terms of fiber diameter, strength and color measurements, and FTIR-ATR analysis. The values obtained for the extractive compounds, hemicellulose, lignin, and cellulose in banana fiber were found to fall within the ranges reported in the literature. The process of machine decortication and combing of the banana plant stem has been determined to yield thinner and more flexible fibers. On the other hand, the thicker and harder fibers are suitable for use in composite structures.
