"DO-IT-YOURSELF" FROM LIFE STYLE PERSPECTIVE: THE PRACTICE, CONSUMPTION AND SUSTAINABILITY
Project no. 841 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
This study is a phenomenological study designed to discuss the sustainable potential of do it yourself behavior in terms of production, consumption, and action in relation to the lifestyle. In this study, individuals with high level of involvement in Do It Youself were analyzed in terms of material, competence and meaning. As a result of the study, alternative segments were developed as an alternative to the DIYer segments mentioned in the literature between convergence to the market and keeping position away from the market: Transformative DIYers and Entrepreneurial DIYers. These segments have shown that people who can be defined as 'hobbiers' differ in the meaning they attach to DIY, their competence and the level of material they use. Therefore, a definition of DIY through its sustainability-centered, anti-consumption approach also reveals the postmodern structure of DIY as an alternative to modernist definition. In particular, different meanings such as self-realization and social visibility have been discusses in the study. Keywords: Do It Yourself, Competence, Material, Meaning, Life Style
