Summary

Nowadays, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) devices are developed and getting cheaper. WSN devices can join the sensor network instantly and operate as a repeater to extend the network by using IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. WSNs have many applications in military, farm, healthcare domains, e.g. in thread positioning, farm harvester guidance and heart beat monitoring systems. A WSN’s nodes can be expanded and collect enviromental values to measure most of the environment events. This project uses WSNs for the development of an Internet of Things (IoT) system in the scope of a case study. Basic functions of the WSN are collecting data. There are many operating systems to make them more power efficient. Contiki is an operating system which runs on devices such as ATMEL AVR IRIS boards. Using multi-threading feature of the Contiki-OS, an Library Fire Detection System is implemented. The system measures real-time temperature value and if there is temperature increase comparing to the indoor temperature, the system alarms and notify the users. System has tested by heating up and the system responded in 4 seconds when a node is triggered. However, the system become more complex by having more functionalties. As a result, it is needed to prevent these problems, which are brought by the complexty. This is provided by using model driven engineering on Contiki operating system to generate Java codes for Raspbery Pi and C++ codes for ESP8266. The system is modeled with a visual modeling environment to provide abstraction for the users/developers.
