Summary
In this thesis, composite particles that have photocatalytic properties were produced by using membrane emulsification and Pickering emulsion methods. In order to further increase the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, membrane emulsification and Pickering emulsion methods which are more popular in recent years than conventional emulsion production methods have been used for the production of more stable particles with homogeneous size distribution. Thus, by coating of TiO2 nanoparticles to the surface of the oil phase, floating photocatalytic composite particles were obtained. Bisphenol A, a hormone disrupting compound, was selected as the model pollutant in order to investigate the effect of these obtained floating photocatalytic composite particles on water treatment. The impacts of parameters such as particle core, pH, initial BPA concentration, H2O2 concentration, humic acid, inorganic anion and cation on the degradation of BPA were investigated. The emulsion droplets produced under conditions where oleic acid was used as oil phase have been seen to have the most promising properties. These composite particles with an average particle diameter of 110 ?m are able to float so they can benefit from UV light more effectively. Under optimum conditions, 74% of BPA removal was observed under UV light source. In addition, BPA removal was investigated by adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition methods using inorganic composite materials and compared with the results obtained with Pickering emulsions. The best removal percentage was obtained by using the lowest amount of material with Pickering emulsions.
