Determination of Anomura (Decapoda, Crustacea) Species of Karaburun Peninsula by DNA Barcoding
Project no. 31848 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2023
Summary

This study aims to investigate the species diversity of the Anomura taxon in the Karaburun Peninsula by supporting morphology-based identifications with genetic (DNA) barcoding. In addition, the study seeks to establish a baseline dataset for Anomura in the region and to contribute the obtained COI (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) nucleotide sequences to international databases such as BOLD and NCBI GenBank, thereby providing the first genetic records for this taxon from Türkiye. This dataset is intended to serve as a reference for future biodiversity, taxonomic and phylogenetic studies.

The Karaburun Peninsula, designated as a Special Environmental Protection Area (SEPA) in 2019, represents an important natural laboratory for assessing the effects of conservation measures on biological diversity. Accordingly, this study integrates traditional morphological identification with molecular methods, including DNA extraction, amplification and sequencing of specimens collected from different habitats in the region. The resulting DNA sequences will be compared with barcode records from global databases, and the outcomes will be evaluated in conjunction with morphological re-examinations.

Furthermore, phylogenetic analyses will be used to infer evolutionary relationships and genetic affinities among the detected species. By generating the first genetic barcodes for Anomura species from the Karaburun Peninsula, this study provides an original contribution to regional biodiversity knowledge while also supporting the evaluation of conservation effectiveness and enriching international genetic reference libraries.
