Evaluation of the Effects of Platelet-Rich Fibrin on Healing in Endodontic Surgery
Project no. 366 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) on healing and postoperative symptoms in endodontic surgery. Methods: Forty patients with extensive periapical lesion (?10 mm) in the anterior region of the upper jaw were included in the study. The patients randomly divided into two groups. Endodontic surgery was performed under local anesthesia using a standardized clinical protocol. After the lesion was cured, the root tip was cut and the retrograde cavity was prepared with endodontic retro-tips. Retrograde cavity was sealed with MTA. In the first group, the bone defect cavity was filled with PRF obtained from the patient's own blood, and in the second group, the bone defect cavity was filled with coagulum. Postoperative pain and swelling were recorded after the operation using the vas scale. Follow-up examination of patients were performed periodically in the third, sixth months, and the first year, and the healing of the lesions was evaluated. The data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Sidak multiple comparison tests (P = 0.05). Results: In the first and second postoperative days in both groups, it was observed that the extraoral swelling reached the highest level compared to the baseline values and statistically significantly lower values were obtained in the PRF group compared to the coagulum group (P?0.05). Postoperative pain values reached the highest level in the third hour after the operation and statistically significantly lower values were found in the PRF group compared to the coagulum group (P?0.05). Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed significant healing of the periapical radiolucency and the absence of clinical symptoms at the one-year follow-up period. It was observed that the periapical lesions decreased significantly compared to the initial size (P?0.05) Conclusion: Within the limitations of this clinical study it can be concluded that usage of PRF during the endodontic surgery could reduce significantly postoperative pain and swelling and increase the clinical outcome and the comfort of the patients.
