CHANGES IN ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS OF SOILS STABILIZED WITH CALCIUM CARBIDE RESIDUE AND FLY ASH
Project no. 1326 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017
Summary
The changes and developments in different industries result in the production of many kinds of waste materials. The possibility of using a waste material -calcium carbide residue - as an additive and its contribution to strength gaining were investigated. Besides,a waste material of thermal power plants named as fly ash has also been studied. Calcium carbide residue and fly ash were used at various ratios as additives. Changes in strength were investigated when calcium carbide residue and fly ash were added at different ratios. Calcium carbide residue ratios were chosen as 5%, 10% and 20%. Fly ash ratios varied from 0 to 20%. The samples had curing times of 7-28-90 days. Wetting-drying cycles have been applied to a group of 28 day samples and cycle numbers varied between 1 and 3. It has been determined that samples which were subjected to wetting-drying, the strength decreased as the number of cycles increased, but especially when 10% calcium carbide was added, the observed strength was twice of dry soil. In this case, the effective fly ash content was in the range of 5-10%. In addition to these, ultrasonic pulse velocity testing was performed and it has been shown that there is a linear relationship between ultrasonic sound velocities and the unconfined compressive strengths.
