INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF BORON DERIVATIVES TO BE USED AS ADDITIVES ON POLYURETHANE INSULATION MATERIALS

Project no. 21768 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020

Summary

Polyurethane materials are expected to have different properties according to the purpose and place of use. Polyurethane foams, which will be used as insulation material, are especially desired to show high combustion resistance with low thermal conductivity. Depending on the characteristics of polyurethane materials, soot, toxic gases and various harmful compounds can spread to the surrounding environment during the ignition and combustion stages that constitute the combustion mechanism. These harmful effects can be reduced by increasing the fire resistance of polyurethanes by applying different techniques during the production phase. In addition to burning resistance and low thermal conductivity, the properties expected from polyurethane materials vary according to the application area. Properties such as density, temperature resistance, mechanical strength, vapor diffusion resistance, water absorption and dimensional stability are informative in determining the intended use of the produced material.

Boron and its derivatives, one of the richest resources of our country, were used in the new polyurethane-based foam material developed for this purpose. Within the scope of this project, studies on a new polyurethane-based material with improved properties were carried out by using boron derivatives such as ground ulexite, borax pentahydrate, borax decahydrate and ground colamenite as additives. The properties of the obtained materials such as combustion resistance, heat transfer coefficient, density, temperature resistance, compressive strength and water absorption were investigated. A systematic study was carried out on the subject in the project.

The work within the scope of the project was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, ground ulexite was added to polyurethane at 1%, 3% and 5% by weight and its effects on combustion resistance were investigated. In the second stage, ground ulexite, borax pentahydrate, borax decahydrate and ground colamenite were added into the pure polyurethane material at the rates of 1%, 3% and 5% by weight, and the changes in the properties of the foam material were observed.
