Summary
In this study, effect of bond improving admixture on strength of cement stabilized sand-bentonite mixtures was investigated. In this scope, the optimum moisture contents and dry unit weights of different soil mixtures were determined by Standard Proctor tests in accordance with ATM D 698 standard. Bentonite content of mixtures are selected as 4%, 8%, 12% and 16%. Since these additive-free specimens are reference specimens, in order to observe the increases in their strength, cement was added to specimens at contents of 3%, 6 and 9%. In addition to optimum moisture contents, in order to ensure the formation of cement hydration products, necessary amount of water is added to obtain a water/cement ratio of 0.8. Additional cement stabilized specimens were prepared using a bond improving admixture, which is presumed to contribute to strength of specimens. In accordance with its prescriptions, this material was partially replaced with mixture water at contents of 1:1 and 1:4, which is simply the ratio of admixture volume over water volume. All specimens were cured in a curing room (95 ± 5% relative humidity at 20 ± 2 °C) for 1,7,28 and 90 days and unconfined compressive strengths were determined. The results were discussed in detail.
