SHORT-TERM PROSPECTIVE CLINICAL EVALUATION OF MONOLITHIC ZIRCONIA CROWNS
Project no. 407 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
The aim of this short-term clinical prospective study is to compare the posterior monolithic zirconia crowns with layered ceramic zirconia crowns in terms of aesthetic, biological and mechanical evaluations during a follow-up period of 2 years. 40 patients with mechanical, aesthetic and biological discomfort with their posterior teeth were included in the study. While 20 teeth were treated with monolithic zirconia restorations, bilayered zirconia crowns were applied to remaining 20 teeth. Clinical examination and high-resolution intraoral photographs were obtained. The teeth were prepared according to a standardized protocol for zirconia-based restorations. After preparation, silicone impressions (Affinis, 3M Espe,Minneapolis,USA) were taken poured with type 4 dental stone (Elite Master, Zhermack, Badia Polesine RO, Italy). Stone models were scanned and crowns were designed on the computer and fabricated in the milling unit. All restorations were checked for marginal fit, inter-proximal contact, and occlusion before cementation; they were cleaned, glaze pasted (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and applied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Adhesive resin cement was used for cementation (Relyx U200, 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). Clinical evaluation was performed at baseline (two days after luting) and at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after luting. After a mean observation period of 24 months, all 40 restorations in 40 patients were examined and none of the restorations required replacement during the 2 years. Although the duration of observation was short, the success rate, i.e., cumulative survival, was 100% at 2 years. While present and past findings can not be directly compared, the success rate of monolithic zirconia crowns in premolars and molars was similar to those reported previously. Satisfaction with the aesthetics, biological and function of the zirconia restorations in this study was high. These results are in accord with other clinical studies reporting high satisfaction with veneered zirconia restorations. A %100 success rate was recorded for all zirconia crowns. And a satisfactory clinical performance was observed during a 2 year period. The results showed that monolithic zirconia and bilayered tooth crowns and fixed dental prostheses had high survival rates and generally successful technical outcomes.
