EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FILM CLIPS TO ELICIT TARTGET EMOTIONS IN TURKISH SAMPLE AND DEVELOPMENT OF A STANDARDIZED SET OF EMOTION-ELICITING FILM CLIPS.

Project no. 788 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018

Summary

This research project aimed to investigate the effectiveness of short film clips to elicit target emotions in Turkish sample and to develop a standardized set of emotion-eliciting film clips. For this purpose, we conducted a systematic review of prior studies (e.g., Gabert-Quillen et al., 2015; Gross, & Levenson, 1995; Hewig et al., 2005; Schaefer et al., 2010), and received large number of new suggestions from Turkish sample via a new survey. From this large stimulus pool, we carefully selected film clips for eight emotion categories: amusement, tenderness, calmness, anger, sadness, disgust, fear and neutral state. The further aim of the study was to test the effectiveness of short videos to elicit target emotions (see Cowen, & Keltner, 2017). Furthermore, the study included a composite emotion category that contains film clips that elicit blends of positive or negative emotions. In total, 104 video clips were tested online by rating the emotional feelings. We assessed each video clip in terms of arousal, valence, intensity, and discreteness. In addition to these measurements, emotion elicitation score was computed for each stimulus (see Zupan, & Eskritt, 2020). Results showed that most of the film clips and short videos were successful at evoking target emotions intensely and discretely. In addition, the study proposed several film clips for the composite emotion category that elicit positive or negative emotion in general. We hope that this research project will provide a rich resource of emotion-eliciting stimuli for future emotion research both in Turkey and the international area.
