Mussel Shell Waste for Sustainable Boron Removal from Geothermal Water

Project no. 22493 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020

Summary

The name boron (B) is derived from borax, the salt of boron. Boron, which is 0.001% in the structure of the earth's crust, is not found in free form in nature. Boron is an important element for humans, animals and plants. According to the researches, it is important for human health that drinking water does not contain high levels of boron. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended a limit concentration of boron as 0.5 mg / L for drinking water. The European Union has adopted the 1 mg/L standard for drinking water. The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat) and means ground heat or ground heat [4]. Geothermal wastewater has negative effects both on irrigation water and on soils irrigated with this water, thus damaging the crops cultivated in these areas. In order to prevent environmental pollution and for these reasons, the boron in water containing boron and waste water should be removed from the water by a suitable method.Boron is one of the most toxic elements that pollute drinking and irrigation water in Turkey. For this reason, boron removal is very important both in terms of human health and in terms of growing healthy agricultural products. Ion exchange, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and adsorption are among the basic methods applied for boron removal from water.Mussel shell, which is a rich source of calcium, is abundant in nature. Clam shell waste is both environmentally friendly and inexpensive. In this thesis, among the boron removal methods, the adsorption method, which is economically inexpensive and highly efficient, and mussel shell waste was chosen as the adsorbent.
