Production of Superhydrophobic Cotton Fabric Using Multilayer Coating (LBL) Method

Project no. 21790 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020

Summary

In this project, a new method, layer-by-layer coating (LBL), where applied to two different 100 % cotton (normal and cationized) fabrics using different chemicals. The aim of the project is to produce superhydrophobic surfaces on cotton fabric by using TiO2, SiO2 nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane polymers through layer-by-layer coating method. Tests and analyzes of untreated and treated fabrics were carried out after the applications. The performed tests are contact angle measurement, air permeability, tensile strength, circular bending rigidity, fabric thickness, surface roughness, water, oil, and stain repellency tests. In addition, SEM, XPS, FTIR and AFM analyzes were performed to characterize the surface morphology, chemical composition, bonding functional groups and surface topography of the fabrics. The results obtained after the tests and analysis were evaluated. In addition, the washing resistance of the treated cotton fabric also examined. The contact angle of the treated cotton fabric measured from 158° before washing to 153.07° after five washes. This result showed that the treated fabric was resistant to washing and still had the superhydrophobic surface feature. As a result, in this project, it is thought that the production of superhydrophobic coatings produced by the layer-by-layer coating method is a very easy, efficient, economical, wash-resistant, environmentally friendly and industrially applicable.
