PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF UMTS AND LTE NETWORK THROUGH PHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS
Project no. 729 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
Operators make measurements called 'driving test' at regular intervals with a view to understand the network service quality provided by the mobile network and network capacity planning to fulfill the network requirements. These measurements can be obtained with a measurement application to be developed for user equipment in order to reduce the effort and cost required for the driving test. Moreover, end user measurements of cellular network parameters can be used to improve network, such as troubleshooting problems in network or determining the number and capacity of base stations. In this project, current smartphone applications used for network parameter measurement in the literature are researched and a new Andoid based application CoverME (Coverage of My Environment) which covers the measurements performed by existing applications and includes additional measurements to these measurements, has developed. The innovation of the developed application is that it allows the measurement accuracy to be analyzed with the help of the return time (RTT-round trip time) parameter, monitor the battery level and its design to operate in a semi-autonomous way to limit energy consumption. The CoverMe measurement application creates a record that contains the RSRP, RSRQ, RSSI, CQI values of the received signal which are key performance parameters of LTE communication systems, cell ID, download speed, and latency and current location for the consistency of the application. As a case study, the measurements were made on a route determined in Isparta province with the developed application. With the obtained measurements, the relationship of these values with each other and the relationship with the download speed were investigated.
