Assesment of Emotion with New Methoods (FaceReader)

Project no. 948 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

There are a lot of different mood induction procedures in literature and especially, meta-analyses studies point out film procedure. There are very few studies in investigations about experiential studies of compared mood induction procedures and in these studies are mostly based on data obtained from subjective experiences rather than other emotional responses (Zhang, et al.,2014; Jallais & Gilet,2010). In this study, three mood induction techniques (film, IAPS, imagery) that are used to elicit three specific emotions (fear, disgust, happiness) are examined in component model of emotional responding. In the study, three mood induction methods (film, imagination and IAPS) were investigated within the framework of facial expressions of success in elicit emotions of fear, disgust and happiness. Within-subject experimental design is used in the research. Thirty-two university students (19 women, 13 men) participated in the experiment. Behavioral response (emotional facial experience) of the participants are measured second-by-second during the film, imagination, and IAPS procedures that induce fear, disgust, and happiness. Facial behavior analyzed with FaceReader 7 software. The results of the study were reported in the context of behavioral response (facial expression). All methods used to evoked emotions of disgust and fear expressed the same intensity in the face. In happiness, IAPS elicit more target emotion expression than the imagination method. Finally, we inclusion of the findings of the first study. Thus, we aimed to determine the compatibility between the emotional response components. Film and IAPS methods elicit the emotional component responses for fear and happiness emotions. For imagination method, coherence was observed only in emotion of disgust. Considering the findings of the two studies, the results were complicated; however, we can say that the film method is more successful than other methods to evoke the emotion of fear. However, when the results are examined within component model of the emotional response without different procedure or emotion type, there are very few significant conclusions about the coherence of emotional response. Component model of the emotional response can not explain low coherence, for this reason this model maybe should be modified or abandoned (Reinsenzein, Studtmann & Horstmann., 2013).
