Development of antibacterial clay effective against harmful bacteria developing in the oral mucosa

Project no. 20715 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019

Summary

The oral cavity provides a suitable environment for the proliferation of many different types of microorganisms. Teeth, tongue, oral mucosa and gingival cavities facilitate the colonization of microorganisms and as a result of the development of these microorganisms in the mouth, bad breath, dental plaque, tooth decay and gum infections occur. It is inevitable for bacteria to grow in the mouth that is not cleaned properly, which can lead to infection, tooth and gum diseases and gradually tooth loss. The presence of therapeutic materials such as braces, in particular, emerges as a preventative factor for oral hygiene to be performed at the desired level, especially for children in developmental age. In the project, it was aimed to produce an antibacterial material against bacteria that may cause tooth decay as well as gum diseases and tooth loss as a result. Antibacterial products that can be used in such diseases cause irritation and discomfort in the mouth in long-term use. Antibiotics used in gingival infections are not effective enough due to the resistance mechanisms developed by many bacteria in recent years, and their use in high doses harms the microbiota. In the material to be produced, clay that has no negative effects on human health was used and the effects of irritation was minimized by preventing the contact of antibacterial materials with the skin. There is no such material or a study with a similar method in the literature.
