AGRO-MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF LOCAL POPULATIONS FOR ASSESSMENT QUALIFIED GENITOR FOR COWPEA BREEDING PROGRAM

Project no. 879 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018

Summary

Cowpea populations are widely spread and cultivated within big variation in different regions of Turkey. This variation is attributed to either naturel or artificial selections made by humans that have been instrumental in the emergence of local cowpea populations endemic to that region with particular agronomic characteristics. In addition, it is important to define the cowpea populations morphologically and to create genetic material for breeders. In this study, a total of 28 parameters in terms of agro-morphological and agronomic characteristics were examined in a two-year trial of 106 local cowpea genotypes in different regions of Turkey, especially in the Aegean region. By providing morphological characterization of cowpea genotypes, it is aimed to identify the populations that are considered promising in terms of desired agronomic properties and to be used as material in the breeding program to be carried out later. Genotypes; in the observations about the flower, it has been determined that approximately 50% of the flowers are white in color and period to the first flowering varies between 40-54 days. In the observations about the pods; 75% of the genotypes have a medium curling degree, the time until the first mature pod appears is 53-102 days, the average number of pods per plant is 1.83-44.08 per plant, and the average yield of fresh pods per plant varies between 11.84-149.78 g/plant. In the observations about the seed; It was determined that grain yield per plant varied between 1.52-27.47 g/plant and 1000 grain weights ranged between 142.92-397.00 g.
