Evaluation of Stachys sparsipilosa R.Bhattacharjee & Hub.-Mor. Species in Terms of Phytochemical Profile and Biological Activity
Project no. 30819 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023
Summary

This study investigated the phytochemical composition and biological activities of Stachys sparsipilosa, a species endemic to Turkey from the Lamiaceae family. The chemical profile of the essential oil and methanol, ethyl acetate and diethyl ether extracts obtained from the aerial parts of the plant were determined by GC-MS and LC-QTOF-MS techniques. According to GC-MS analysis, 95.22% of the essential oil was identified and the main compound classes were oxygenated sesquiterpenes (30.99%), oxygenated diterpenes (16.04%) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (15.39%). The main compounds were caryophyllene oxide (11.96%), cubebol (6.93%), epi-bicycloscyphelandrene (4.89%), kauran-16-ol (7.35%), kaur-16-ene (5.81%) and manoyl oxide (4.16%). LC-QTOF-MS library analysis identified 168 metabolites, including various classes such as phenolics, terpenes, iridoids, lactones, alkaloids and primary metabolites. In the quantification study, chlorogenic acid (946.28 mg/g) and rutin (270.48 mg/g) were detected at the highest level. The methanol extract had the highest total phenolic (76.32 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (49.13 mg QE/g) contents. In cell culture tests (LNCaP, HeLa, MCF-7, A549, MRC-5), no cytotoxicity was observed below 200 µg/mL. The findings indicate that S. sparsipilosa has remarkable potential with its rich essential oil composition and phenolic profile.
