Relationship Between Nocturnal Arrhythmias and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
Project no. 21215 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary

Background and Aims: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a disease characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep. Arrhythmias are common among cardiovascular complications. Nocturnal arrhythmias are particularly common. Based on this, our study aimed to determine the frequency and types of Sleep Apnea Syndrome in patients with nocturnal arrhythmia and to evaluate the effect of PAP therapy on nocturnal arrhythmia in patients diagnosed with OSAS.

Material and Methods: Between October 2019 and January 2022, patients with nocturnal arrhythmias in the Cardiology department will be tested for sleep with a portable device in the Sleep Laboratory. All-night polysomnography (PSG) will be performed in patients with OSAS detected in sleep examination performed with a portable device, followed by titration for Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) treatment in appropriate patients. Patients using PAP device will be re-evaluated in the 3rd month of treatment and the effect of PAP treatment on nocturnal arrhythmias will be examined.

Results: 65 patients with nocturnal arrhythmias were evaluated in the sleep laboratory. Sleep examination was performed in 58 of these 65 patients with a home-style 4-channel portable polygraph. PSG examination was performed in our sleep laboratory in 33 of 49 patients with AHI≥ 5/hour in the screening test, and AHI≥ 5/hour was found in all patients. PAP treatment was started in 28 patients as a result of PAP titration. Premature atrial and ventricular contractions are the most common nocturnal arrhythmias. 8 of 28 patients who were started on PAP treatment were controlled after 3 months of PAP treatment. In the control ECG Holter examination, a decrease was observed in the nocturnal arrhythmias detected before the treatment.

Conclusions: It was observed that the incidence of nocturnal arrhythmia was significantly reduced in patients who came for control with appropriate PAP therapy.

Key words: OSAS, PAP, Nocturnal arrhythmia
