THERMAL IMAGING FOR MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS

Project no. 1386 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

In present technology, the methods to detect tumour within the body are inefficient, especially when it comes to breast cancer. Since the methods of mammography, X-ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), ultrasound has their disadvantages such as high cost, need for infrastructure, being harmful to body or being painful for the patient, the search for a better non-invasive low cost system has accelerated. As a solution to these problems, the thermal inspection with the purpose of tumour detection becomes more important. In this study, phantoms imitating the thermal properties of breast tissue were produced. Islets of heat are formed with resistors embedded in the phantom to mimic the tumour. Using thermochromic foil that is sensitive to heat and changes colour with temperature change, the presence and location of the tumour were determined in in-vitro conditions with the designed measurement setup and analysis. In order to find the resolution and the accuracy of the thermochromic foils, we compared the results from CCD camera with thermal camera images for the same experiment.
