A Proposal for the Development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Tracking, Monitoring and Flight Permission Systems within the Scope of Safe Flight: UAV Air Traffic Management (UAM)
Project no. 32356 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024
Summary

The rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle technology has been adopted by many sectors, leading to widespread use. UAVs have been discovered and developed across various sectors, integrating into daily life. However, air traffic management problems, particularly those that can create unsafe situations, hinder the further spread of UAVs. Civilian and military UAVs currently operate in dedicated airspace. However, as UAV technology advances, particularly in passenger and cargo transportation, it necessitates the use of integrated airspace. In summary, an integrated system is needed that allows UAVs to be used in airspaces where all aviation activities, including passenger and cargo aircraft, air taxis, general aircraft, hot air balloons, and more, are carried out. While this has been highlighted as a need in academic research and legal regulations, solutions to this issue have not yet been developed. This project aims to develop a flight tracking, monitoring, and flight permit system that provides UAV users with flight area and altitude information via a mobile application. The feasibility of this demo application will be verified and presented as a system proposal. This will prevent simultaneous UAV flights from operating at the same altitude and flight area, and will prevent UAV flights from operating in airspace that is notified or meteorologically unfavorable. This system aims to ensure the safety of UAV flights by operating a pre-flight warning and alert system for UAVs, while also providing a way for UAVs to operate in a controlled, integrated airspace.

As part of the project, a module will be added to the existing Aegean IHAport mobile application, which was created as an output of Project No. 28453, supported by the Ege University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Office. This module will allow users to specify flight coordinates, including region, area, and approximate location, and will provide instant feedback on the airworthiness status of the relevant region by checking the notation and meteorological information. Additionally, users of the application will be able to specify flight coordinates, such as region, area, and approximate location, by marking them in a frame. They will be able to see other aircraft operating in the same airspace, especially UAVs. The project will explore the functionality of the UAV-Air Traffic Management System (UAV-HTY) by testing various transportation types, different UAV categories, and numerous scenarios that pose safety risks. Furthermore, the applicability of the UAV-HTY system will be fully demonstrated through literature and regulatory research. The mobile application module developed for this project will utilize artificial intelligence support, demonstrating the system's potential to prevent unsafe situations through unmanned control.
