A new method: A simple method of determining the critical threshold in a single session
Project no. 21696 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2020
Summary

The critical threshold (CT) emerged with an evaluation directly in line with its physiological definition, rather than estimating the critical power (CP) based on mathematically based assumptions. However, many tests are needed to obtain true CT. The aim of this study was to develop a method to estimate CT in a single session. 12 well-trained male cyclists participated in the study (VO2max: 64.9±2.9 ml/kg/min). Following the famirilization session, first respiratory threshold (AeE), second respiratory threshold (AnE) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) levels were determined by ramp test. Then, KGs were calculated from 3-5 constant-load tests based on mathematical assumptions. CT levels were analyzed by finding a work rate that could remain 5% close VO2 respons to VO2max. CP levels were also calculated with a 3-minute all-out maximal exercise protocol. In addition, using the alfa coefficient recommended by this study, an additional 3-minute all-out maximal exercise protocol was applied for an another session. Differences between variables were evaluated with repeated measures LSD. CT was determined in accordance with the sub-physiological definitions of the severe exercise domain (294±43.7 W). The average CT level corresponded to 94% of VO2max. There was no difference between the power output achieved in the 3-minute test with the alfa coefficient recommended in this study (276±40.7 W) and the test with the orginal one (278±41.6 W) (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between the power output at the CT level and the power output achieved in the 3-minute test with the alfa coefficient recommended in this study (p<0.05). As a result, the power output achieved in the test performed with the newly proposed method corresponded to a different intensity than CT.
