Determination of Gonad Development and Condition Index for Rayed Pearl Oyster (Pinctada radiata, Leach 1814) in Izmir Urla-Özbek Coasts
Project no. 1134 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
This study was conducted to determine the subjects such as gonad development stages, meat yield and condition index of pearl oyster and effects of water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a concentration and total particulate matter on this subjects. Throughout the study annual water temperature ranged between 11°C and 28.6 °C with a mean value of 18.73±1.65 °C. During study the average water salinity was ‰ 37.08±0.25, chlorophyll-a was 2.12±0.65µg/l Mean particulate matter was determined 12.13±1.56 mg/l annually. Meat yield of Pinctada radiata was ranged between 16.45±0.45% and 24.17±0.6% while condition index was ranged between 5.91±0.22% and 12.07±0.52%. The differences between condition index and meat yield values according to months was found statistically significant (p<0.05). Gonad development phases of pearl oysters were observed for 12 months. The gonad development stages were defined as 5 stages which are inactive, growing, ripe eggs, spawning and spent. It is determined that reproduction significantly occurs in July, August and September. During the study it is observed that spawning continues throughout the year except March and April. The difference between months was statistically significant (p<0.05).
