Investigation of possible effects of triterpenoids on membrane lipid systems at molecular level by biophysical and quantum chemical methods

Project no. 22233 · Status: Kapanmış · 2021

Summary

Today, old medicines and bioactive plant components are being returned to treat modern diseases. Therefore, terpenes and terpenoids are used as one of the most suitable bioactive compounds for many diseases, especially cancer treatment. These compounds are essential for cellular membrane formation and function and are the basis for the formation of signaling molecules such as steroid hormones and cognate receptors. In this study, the interaction of some molecules in the triterpenoid family with model membrane lipid systems has been systematically studied at the molecular level for the first time with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and quantum chemical computation techniques. These studies, together with the use of experimental and theoretical methods and temperature and concentration-dependent measurements, have allowed us to expand the research on terpenes and their derivatives and lipid model membrane systems in the literature and provide more detailed and in-depth information about the interactions between terpene/terpenoid – membrane lipids. On the other hand, the investigation of the biological activities of terpenoids will contribute to the selection of drugs and the development of treatment methods for the related disease, and will form a theoretical basis for the development of new drugs, which scientists have shown great interest in.
