Investigation of Biogas Systems Treatment in Cold Climate Environment
Project no. 609 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
Reactor operating temperature is the one of the most important factor that effect biogas system efficiency. Most of biogas stamens are running at “mesophilic conditions” like around 35 °C. System heat loses is becoming an important value where the regions that average air temperatures is low. The heat demand in biogas systems that primarily aimed for electricity production can provide from the cogeneration unit. Heat can be obtained by the recovery of waste heat from the engine cooling and exhaust of internal combustion engines that running with biogas during electricity generation. For this reason, reactor heat loses is significant importance while designing the system. However, heat loses in the small and mid-scale biogas systems that particularly for rural areas without electricity production is really important. Because these losses are compensated by utilisation of the biogas that produced by itself. Reducing system heat losses means an increase in total system efficiency which affects the feasibility positively. In this concept, options like improving the insulation of the biogas reactor or embedding the reactor under the ground can be met by the investor. For the evaluation of these options, the improvement for reducing heat losses is necessary to predict how that affects the system efficiency. It is important to answer these questions in a optimal way in order to expand the biogas systems for rural areas. In this study, three biogas systems which designed and implemented with the protocol signed between Ege University Biomass Energy Systems and Technologies Application and Research Centre (BESTMER) and East Anatolian Project Region Development Department (DAP) were monitored for a year. These systems are located in Eleşkirt/Ağrı, Elazığ and Van which climate conditions are harsh. Heat loses and hourly temperature data’s from 01/01/2018 to 31/12/2018 are used for to evaluate in simulation of ground embedded; at surface; insulated and non-insulated biogas systems which has a capacity of five, fifty and fifty bovines manure, respectively. According to the obtained results, it was concluded that the reactors of small-scale systems in regions where the average air temperature is low should be buried under the ground with insulation. For Mid-scale systems in warmer regions should be analysed and evaluated clearly before investment.
