Summary

Water is the most basic element that maintains the elasticity and structure of the skin. For the skin to maintain its healthy appearance and functionality, it is vital to maintain the water content of the outer layer (Stratum corneum). Water loss here weakens the restructuring of the outer layer. Thus, trans-epidermal water loss increases and the skin loses its elasticity. As this process progresses, skin dryness becomes inevitable. During the skin dryness process, inflammatory substances are released, which leads to hardening and cracking of the skin. As a result, the skin becomes more sensitive and more vulnerable to infections. This process can occur due to environmental factors or the biological aging process.

The use of moisturizing preparations also helps to improve the symptoms of skin dryness and therefore the appearance of aged skin. For this reason, moisturizing preparations have a large place among cosmetic preparations.

The aim of protecting natural resources and securing the future of the planet is one of the most important social responsibilities of the new world. For this reason, the cosmetics industry also focuses on increasing sustainable preparations.

Silk protein and spirulina; are good examples of sustainable content. In addition to being sustainable content, silk protein has many benefits such as being compatible with the skin, helping to reduce water loss from the skin, moisturizing the skin, and increasing the elasticity of the skin. Spirulina also similarly moisturizes the skin, helps prevent wrinkles, and thus delays skin aging.

In addition to these advantages, silk protein and spirulina have disadvantages such as having a bad odor, low stability, and low solubility problems due to the protein structure of silk protein. To prevent these problems and to extend the duration of the preparation on the skin and therefore the duration of its effect, microparticles of silk protein and spirulina were prepared. Sodium alginate, an environmentally friendly and biocompatible polymer, was used as an excipient in the preparation of microparticles. Then, these microparticles were loaded into the hydrogel prepared with chitosan polymer, known for its properties such as low toxicity and good biocompatibility. Characterization studies of the finished product were carried out.

This thesis aims to prepare a moisturizing and antiaging cosmetic preparation containing silk protein and spirulina active ingredients with sustainability goals, to evaluate the potential of new carrier systems in cosmetic products, and to contribute to the development of innovative approaches in skin care.
