REMOVAL OF DYES FROM WATER BY USING MAGNETIC NANOPARTICLES

Project no. 470 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

In this study, a magnetic adsorbent was prepared by coating the surface of nigella sativa press cake which is an agricultural waste with Fe3O4 (magnetite) nanoparticles. Adsorption of methylene blue dyes from aqueous solutions with this adsorbent was evaluated by examining various parameters. For this purpose, parameters such as pH, adsorbent dose, and adsorption time were examined. Equilibrium (Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevic), kinetic (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle models) and thermodynamic model studies were also performed. The recovery of the methylene blue dye retained by the adsorbent was carried out using various solvents. At pH 11, the methylene blue dye was removed with a yield of 93.22%. The optimum adsorbent dose was 0.6 g/L (15 mg). Adsorption kinetics were found to be quite rapid. Adsorption yield was 87.78% in 120 minutes; it was calculated that it reached 99.40% in 24 hours. Adsorption was found to be endothermic, spontaneous and favorable. It was found that the kinetics were obeyed pseudo second order model. Since the highest correlation coefficient value belongs to Langmuir isotherm, the adsorption was thought to fit this model. According to Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 454.54 mg/g. The average free energy change E (kJ/mol) value was calculated to be 4.39. The methylene blue dye was removed from the adsorbent with ethanol in 49.21% yield.
