BIOCHAR PRODUCTION FROM TEXTILE WASTES

Project no. 1086 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016

Summary

Textile wastes have a heterogeneous structure and due to bulky and porous structure, their energy density is low. Therefore, in order to use textile wastes as energy feedstock, they should be transformed into a homogenous and carbon-rich structure called biochar. The aim of this study is to investigate the recycling of textile wastes into biochar through torrefaction. In this context, textile wastes containing cotton and polyester fibres having the highest ratios in the world fibre consumption were selected. Textile wastes were torrefied at 300-400 °C and mass yields, fuel characteristics and combustion properties of the resultant biochars were investigated. Surface morphology was also investigated by SEM analysis. It was observed that the ash content of textile-based biochars was very low and the sulphur content was below the measurement limit. The higher heating value of the resultant biochars was found to be 24-29 MJ/kg. It was shown that the biochars produced from cellulosic and cotton/polyester blended textile wastes have a high potential for the use as energy feedstock.
