Evaluation of Paliurus spina-christi Mill. in terms of Quality Control and Biological Activity
Project no. 24122 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2022
Summary

Paliurus spina-christi Mill., a member of the Rhamnaceae family, is known in Turkey by various names, such as "kara çalı, çalı dikeni, çaltı dikeni and çeşmezen." It is used in traditional medicine for various ailments, such as kidney stones, diabetes, and rheumatism. Quality control studies were carried out on the fruit and leaf drugs in accordance with the Turkish Pharmacopoeia. The results obtained are given as percentages. It is aimed to provide specifications for monographs that can be prepared in the future, as there is no monograph for the plant in the pharmacopeias of Turkey and other countries.

As a result of the literature research, it was determined that the parts of the plant contain flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, flavonoid glycosides, fatty acids, alkaloids, sterols, amino acids, sugar compounds, and minerals. Some of the phenolic compounds, including flavonoids, are major in the karaçalı plant. Within the scope of the study, total phenol content determination and total flavonoid content determination were performed on the extracts prepared with methanol using quantitative methods. In addition, the quantitative determination of rutin and the presence of apigenin in the extracts were performed using the HPLC-DAD method.

Inhibition of cholinesterase enzymes is an important treatment method in Alzheimer's disease, in our study, the acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase enzyme inhibitory activities of the methanol extracts were investigated. In addition, the antioxidant capacity of the extracts was investigated in terms of cell viability and antioxidant enzyme activity in a hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress model.
