REMOVAL OF ANTIMONY (Sb) FROM WATER BY POLYMER ENHANCED ULTRAFILTRATION (PEUF)
Project no. 20716 · Status: Kapanmış · 2019
Summary
In this study, two different water-soluble polymers containing N-methyl-D-glucamine and quaternary ammonium groups were synthesized and their performance in the removal of antimony Sb3+ and Sb5+ by polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) method was investigated. It was used to remove Sb3+ (cationic form in +3 oxidation state) with a polymer containing an N-methyl-D-glucamine functional group and Sb(OH)6- (anionic form in +5 oxidation state) with a polymer containing a quaternary ammonium group. Studies on the removal of antimony by the PEUF method were carried out in two different ways: batch and continuous. The effects of solution pH, Sb:polymer ratio and interfering ions on antimony removal were studied in batch studies. The effects of Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ cations on the removal of Sb3+ and of Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and PO43- anions on the removal of Sb(OH)6- were investigated. In studies with a polymer containing an N-methyl-D-glucamine functional group, the highest removal rate was found at a pH of 11 and an Sb3+:polymer molar ratio of 1:20, with 82% removal achieved under optimum conditions. It was found that the low concentrations of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ ions in the solution did not affect the removal of Sb3+. In the studies carried out with the quaternary ammonium functional polymer, the highest removal was found at pH 9. The molar ratio of Sb5+:polymer was 1:60 and a removal of 67% was obtained under optimum conditions. It was found that low concentrations of SO42-, NO3- and PO43- anions in the solution did not affect the removal of Sb5+. In the presence of chloride ion, Sb5+ removal rate decreased.
