The Effects of Multislice Computed Tomography Positioned in the Emergency Department on the Diagnosis and Management Process of Patients

Project no. 122 · Status: Kapanmış · 2017

Summary

Introduction: In recent years, Computed Tomography (CT) examinations are frequently used examination methods during the evaluation of patients in the Emergency Department. The purpose of our study is to determine the CT examination profile of our hospital and to determine the effect of the CT results on the hospitalization and patient evaluation. Material and Method: A total of 1222 patients who were admitted to the Emergency Department of Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital between 06.2017-12.2019 and requested CT imaging as a diagnostic test were included in the study. By examining the files of the patients included in the study; Patients' age groups, gender, preliminary diagnoses, trauma history, requested CT imaging examination and CT findings, and whether pathology matching the preliminary diagnosis was detected on CT was recorded. Findings: In the evaluation of the patients according to the diagnosis groups, it was found that 40.9% (n: 501 patients) of the patients were examined due to trauma. Head traumas constituted 57% of these cases. In 94% of these cases, emergency pathology was excluded with CT. Emergency pathology was detected in 70.9% of vertebral CT examinations and 27.9% of maxillofacial CT examinations. Cranial CT examinations constituted 82% of the imaging performed for non-traumatic reasons. Emergency radiologic pathology was not available in 88.8% of these examinations. When the hospitalization requirement of the pathologies detected in the patients is examined; it was determined that patients in advanced age group required more hospitalization (p <0.05). Conclusion: The most common cause of admission to the emergency department is head and neck trauma within subgroup of trauma patients. The cranial CT examinations with neurological preliminary diagnoses constitute the majority of imaging performed for non-traumatic reasons. With these examinations, emergency radiopathologies are mostly excluded. However, when the imaging results are examined, it is noteworthy that the number of normal CT scans is quite high.
