THE INVESTIGATION OF THE INTERACTIONS OF VITAMIN A AND ITS DERIVATIVES WITH MODEL MEMBRANES BY SPECTROSCOPIC AND CALORIMETRIC TECHNIQUES
Project no. 626 · Status: Kapanmış · 2015
Summary
Biological membranes are one of the most important cell structures surrounding the cells and cell organelles. Since it forms a barrier between the inside and the outside of the cell, it plays an important role in almost all cellular events. Since biological membranes contain multiple components, it is difficult to understand the interactions between components and additives. For this reason, studying with model membranes, where we can change the number and concentration of components, becomes important in explaining the events in biological membranes. Generally these systems are spherical vesicles of lipid bilayers consisting of mixtures of one or more of the natural or synthetic origin phospholipids. In this study, physical interactions of substances such as vitamin with the model membranes consisting of phospholipids (membrane phase transition, membrane order and dynamics) and the thermal changes consisting of the addition of agents into the model membranes is investigated by using FTIR and DSC techniques depending on temperature and concentration. Results obtained from this study helped us to have knowledge about the physiological effects of bioactive compound such as vitamin and phospholipids on humans. Besides, this study also contributed in understanding and interpreting molecular mechanisms of biological effects of substances such as vitamin on membranes.
