Summary

ABSTRACT

Gulfs, compared to the open sea, are among the marine environments most affected by pollution due to their low water movement, shallow depths, and dense human populations. The Inner Gulf of Izmir has been under pressure from many pollutants for the last 60 years. Among these pollutants, some commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are particularly noteworthy. The aim of this study is to investigate some NSAIDs (ibuprofen, dichlorophenac, naproxen, and acetylsalicylic acid) that have not been studied before in the Inner Gulf of Izmir. For this purpose, samples were taken from 5 stations in the Inner Gulf of Izmir and from the wastewater inlet and outlet of the Izmir Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant. In addition, some physicochemical properties and nutrient concentrations of seawater were determined in the study. Naproxen was detected at all stations between 232.5 and 2060.4 ng/L. The lowest value was detected at Station 5, which was selected as the reference station. In addition, dichlorophenac was measured at 956.3 ng/L at station 1 and 1607.5 ng/L at station 3, indicating significant transport into the inner bay via small streams. At the treatment plant inlet, ibuprofen was detected at 489.4 ng/L, naproxen at 6575.4 ng/L, and dichlorophenac at 1333.10 ng/L. At the treatment plant outlet, the naproxen value (4528.6 ng/L) decreased slightly. In this project, the first of its kind in the Izmir Bay, dichlorophenac and naproxen were predominantly detected. Regular monitoring studies at all levels of the ecosystem are crucial for a better understanding of the effects of these drugs in the Izmir Bay.

Keywords: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), naproxen, dichlorophenac, Izmir Inner Bay.
