Summary
Usage of fossil fuels which increase air pollution and cause global warming is replaced by alternative renewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources can be classified as solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal, wave and biomass. In this regard, intensive studies are carried out on the production of liquid and gaseous biofuels and various chemicals from biomass by chemical and biochemical methods. In this project, the catalytic hydrothermal conversion of biomass to platform chemicals such as 5-HMF and Levulinic acid was studied. Jerusalem artichoke was selected as inulin rich real biomass feedstock. Van Soest analysis was performed on jerusalem artichoke that used in experimental studies to determine it’s cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin content. In the experimental studies, under nitrojen atmosphere, at different biomass/solvent ratios (1 g, 1.5g, 2g Jerusalem Artichoke/22 ml solvent), 140, 160, 180 °C temperature ranges, pH values of 0.5, 1, 1.5 H2SO4 solution as a selected Brönsted acid conditions were studied. Samples were taken at 20, 40, 60 ve 120. minutes. Experiments were carried out at batch autoclave reactors. At this conditions the yield of Lewis acids such as AlCl3, ZnCl2 and CrCl3 on biomass conversion was studied. The synergistic effect of Lewis and Brönsted acids were investigated and results were evaluated. The optimum condition for the conversion of biomass to platform chemicals among the selected reaction conditions was obtained. Analysis of liquid products by HPLC and TOC were carried out.
