Development characterization and applications of chemical sensors for the detection of strontium in waters

Project no. 22104 · Status: Kapanmış · 2020

Summary

Research focuses on the importance of detection and elimination of strontium (Sr) for environmental health and safety. Strontium can produce toxic effects at high concentrations, necessitating its monitoring and control, especially in drinking water. Traditional methods are usually focused on either detection or elimination, but this study presents an innovative approach combining both functions.

The research developed a system comprising Modified Alginic Acid Hydrogel (MTH) particles, modified with Murexide and Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), and Xylenol Orange-processed Alginic Acid Hydrogel (XOH) particles. Molecules in MTH and XOH particles exhibit color changes in the presence of strontium ions, allowing for rapid and accurate detection of strontium levels in water samples. Additionally, the alginic acid biopolymer in these particles provides high adsorption capacity (9.2 mg/g for MTH and 9.3 mg/g for XOH).

Colorimetric measurements were conducted using photos taken with a smartphone camera and analyzed with image processing software like ImageJ. This method offers a low-cost, accessible alternative to traditional spectrophotometric devices.

In conclusion, MTH and XOH particles can function as multifunctional sensors capable of detecting strontium concentrations from 1 mg/L to 10 mg/L and effectively adsorbing these ions. The findings contribute to the monitoring and improvement of water quality and encourage the use of these particles in water treatment systems and environmental monitoring applications. Moreover, the ability to detect strontium using a simple smartphone paves the way for future research in this field, providing a solid foundation for innovative and effective solutions.
