Summary

To test recombinant line immunassay (LIA) which we widely use routinely as an anti-HIV confirmatory assay, collecting samples are needed for cost and labor effective use. This test gives results in 2-8 days. If the test needs to be retested then the time will be up to 15 days. Use of rapid HIV 1 RNA test that can be helpful in emergency situations is limited because of the cost of the test and especially can not be helpful in routine for HIV 2 infections. In this study, to help the clinician for patient management, we compared our LIA results with another immuno chromatographic confirmatory assay that has the same specialities and the results are given in a short time. The sudy showed that Geenius test had a 100 % sensitivity and specificity in HIV infected and non-infected cases (when excluding antibody borderline cases). Indeterminant results were observed 2.06 % in HIV infected and 5.55 % and non-infected cases with LIA. Nevertheless we noted that in patients with indeterminant results, HIV 1 RNA and follow up made the definite diagnosis possible. We see that both of the assays are helpful in HIV diagnosis. The newly used Geenius assay is suitable for spesific HIV diagnosis with a short test time, easy to perform charactheristic, HIV 1 and 2 differentiation, having higher sensitivity and specificity, and having a 96.8 % concordance when compared to LIA.
