Summary

Today, the extensive use of fossil fuels due to the increasing energy need increases environmental pollution day by day. Despite the increasing demand for nonrenewable energy resources, energy resources are also decreasing. For these reasons, the trend towards renewable and environmentally friendly fuel sources is increasing. One of the most significant sources of energy among renewable energy sources is the production of energy from biomass. Wood waste, aquatic plants, agricultural products and animal wastes are potential fuels as biomass sources. In this study, batch hydrothermal liquefaction of lignocellulosic biomass with glycerol and in the presence of alkaline catalysts was investigated. In the experimental study, the ratio of 2 g biomass/ 18 mL solvent was studied. From pure glycerin as a solvent, as a model solution, glycerin: water ratio was used in three different ratios ((6 mL:12 mL); (9 mL:9 mL), and (12 mL: 6 mL)). The reaction temperature was determined as 3 different temperatures in total (200, 300, and 400 oC). The reaction processes were carried out for 30, 60, and 90 minutes, and the time-dependent product yield and composition were also investigated. All experiments were repeated 3 times both without a catalyst and in the presence of 2 different alkaline catalysts (KOH and K2CO3). As a result of study, it is learned that the catalysts to be used in biochemical and thermochemical processes directly affect the yield and composition of the product to be obtained at the end of the process, and also that awide variety of solvents are used in the liquefaction of biomass in a solvent environment by thermochemical methods. It is known that the solvent being a byproduct or other reaction waste rather than a pure compound is also important forwaste disposal. For this reason, the use of glycerol as a solvent is discussed. Glycerol is a by-product of biodiesel production and a polyalcohol. Additionally, glycerol can interact with biomass with high lignin content more than other solvents and can facilitate the separation of lignin from the structure.
