Summary

Traffic accidents cause a significant number of fatalities and substantial material damage each year. The number of accidents that occur is a good indicator for determining the safety of traffic facilities. However, it requires many years of waiting to obtain statistically significant data from traffic accidents. Therefore, researchers have started to develop new methods for safety analysis by evaluating the number and types of conflicts occurring in traffic facilities instead of traffic accidents. Although traffic conflicts at intersections are traditionally categorized into three main types: diverging, merging, and crossing, it is evident that more detailed evaluations reveal the importance of data such as the location of these conflicts, the speeds of the involved vehicles, their directions, and the angles between vehicles. Using these detailed data collected about the vehicles in conflict, various representative safety measures have been established. The most frequently used measure in studies is the time-to-collisio. In this study, conflicts occurring at roundabouts were examined, and a safety analysis of three roundabouts was conducted. Critical time-to-collision values were determined for conflicts occurring in the weaving areas of the roundabout. Image processing algorithms were utilized for vehicle counts. The AIMSUN simulation program and the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model program were used to determine the number of conflicts. Lastly, the conflict severities were determined according to the S
