Project no. 30826 · Status: Kapanmış · 2023
Summary

Intercultural Literary studies have begun to be addressed comprehensively as cultural diversity and differences have gained importance recently. The analysis of cultural patterns reflected in literary works suggests new perspectives with new analyzes of intercultural and comparative themes (Aytaç 1997). In this context, in the two women's autobiographies written at the beginning of the 21st century that we have chosen within the scope of the project, the perspectives of a Turkish and a British woman writer on 20th century world history, local socio-cultural, political and economic events from individual to social are analyzed comparatively.

The novels that are chosen are Seven Houses (2001), written in English by the Turkish writer from Izmir, Alev Crourtier, and A House Unlocked (2001), written by the British writer of Egyptian origin, Penelope Lively. Such a comparison has not been found in the literature. Contributing to contemporary Turkish and English literature by writing a book chapter in English with original value and having it published is among the results we expect. The vital elements of novels and the interculturality of these elements and the memory issue extending from individual to social are examined with a Narrative-Hermeneutic (Ricoeur 1983) approach, on the axis of orientalism (Said 1978), time and space (Bachelard 1958 and Lefebvre 1974) theories. Ricoeur's Time and Narrative (1983), Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) and Homi K. Bhabha's Local Spaces, Global Times (1994) are some works that are consulted for theoretical background.

Key Words: Intercultural Literature, 21st Century Women's Autobiographies, Individual and Social Memory, Comparative Literature.
