Summary

Metal complexes have long been in the limelight as they have a wide range of applications such as catalysis, anti-cancer complexes, nanoparticles and photoactive compounds due to their openness to modification. The electronic and steric properties of metal complexes can be perfected in combination with ligands. Therefore, ligand selection is an important step to design advanced structures. The 1,10-phenanthroline ligand to be used in the project is an unmissable opportunity for metal complex synthesis thanks to the chelating nitrogen atoms in the aromatic rings and also provides access to new arrangements for easy control of complex properties. In addition, 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives have tumouricidal and antimicrobial activities. According to literature studies, the fact that they show their anti-cancer properties mostly by causing mitochondrial dysfunctions leads to target selection in studies. In addition, metal complexes exhibit remarkable antitumoural and antimetastatic activities. ruthenium and iridium complexes have advantages in the development of metal-based drugs alternative to cis-platinum. In particular, ruthenium is less toxic than platinum because it can mimic iron and bind to biomolecules. In addition, arene rings in the metal complexes to be synthesised in the study are hydrophobic, which is one of the factors that can positively affect the activity by facilitating the entry of the complexes into the cells. In the light of this information, 1,10 - phenanthroline will be selected as the starting material and ruthenium and iridium complexes will be synthesised by modifying the ligand structure with benzimidazole in order to increase its solubility. In addition, the lipophilicity of the structure will be changed by attaching alkyl chains to the nitrogen atoms in the new structure in order to facilitate its passage through the cell membrane to increase its effect in anti-cancer studies. In conclusion, the aim of this study is to synthesise metal complexes with anti-cancer properties and to investigate their activity against various cancer cell lines.
