The Effect of Different Denture Cleaning Methods on Candida Albicans Uptake on Two Base Resins and a Soft Lining Material Surface

Project no. 22757 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2021

Summary

Aim: To investigate the efficacy of different denture cleaning methods on C.Albicans incubated on two base resins and a soft liner.

Materials and Methods: For this study, a total of 90 polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyamide (Deflex) and soft liner (Molloplast B) disc specimens were prepared in 2×10 mm dimensions. ATCC 10231 strain was activated by incubation at 37°C for 24 hours in Saboraud Dextrose Agar medium. All of the specimens were coded by placing in 90 propylene tubes and autoclaved by adding Saboroud Dextrose Broth medium on them. The final cell number was adjusted to 105 CFU by adding C.Albicans solution to the tubes. In order to allow the Candida cells to attach to the discs, they were left to incubate for 48 hours. The tubes were rotated with a vortex device to transfer the cells attached to the surface of the samples to the artificial saliva. Artificial saliva was taken into a petri dish with a micropipette, Saboraud dextrose agar was added to it, and left for incubation. Reproducing C. Albicans were counted according to the CFU method by making markings on the petri dish. Afterwards, the samples were cleaned with Corega® cleaning tablet, Dettol ® liquid soap and BEE'O UP® propolis drops twice a day for 9 days. On the 5th and 9th days, the amount of C.Albicans on the samples was counted according to the CFU method.

Results: Before applying the cleaning protocol, the differences between PMMA and polyamide and between polyamide and soft liner were significant at p˂0.05 significance level, the differences between PMMA and soft liner was found to be insignificant (p>0,05). After the cleaning protocol was applied, the differences between PMMA and soft liner and polyamide and soft liner were significant (p<0,05). On the 9th day, the differences between effervescent tablet and liquid soap were significant (p<0,05); The differences between effervescent tablet and propolis drops were significant, and the differences between liquid soap and propolis drops were insignificant (p>0,05).

Conclusion: Effervescent cleaning tablets are currently effective denture cleaning agents for PMMA and polyamide. Similar results were obtained with propolis in the cleaning method with liquid soap. Propolis drop solution can be used as a cleaning agent for soft lining materials by improving its formulation.

Keywords: C.Albicans ,PMMA, polyamide, soft lining , propolis, cleaning methods
