Project no. 404 · Status: Kapanmış · 2018
Summary
The aim of this epidemiological study was to determine bruxism during temporomandibular joint examination in children aged between 7-12 with the aim of investigating possible etiologic factors, explaining the relationship between the bruxism and etiologic factors as well as contributing to preventive approaches. The objective of this study is to evaluate clinical features of patients with bruxism and to investigate the effects of occlusal splint on sleep bruxism. In this study, 200 patients aged between 7 and 12 who were referred to Ege University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry were participated. Research Diagnostic Criteria/Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC)/TMD Axis I and Axis II were applied to each patient. 31 patients who were diagnosed with sleep bruxism had an occlusal splint and the patients were instructed to wear the occlusal splint every night for 3 months. TME examination was repeated before and after the splint use and also once a month. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 program for comparison of before and after treatment. The parameters of this study were age, gender, pain, openning pattern, joint sounds, pain on palpation, dental abrasion and oral parafunctions. Statistically a significant reduction in the frequency and duration of sleep bruxism was observed with the use of occlusal splint. In addition, there was a decrease in signs and symptoms of bruxism such as pain, deviation and joint sounds. As a result, the occlusal splint treatment decreases the severity of sleep bruxism. Occlusal splint can be considered as an easily applicable treatment method which has a positive effect in the treatment of sleep bruxism in children.
