Adaptation of Inventory of School Motivation to the Turkish Culture and Examining Its Psychometric Properties
Project no. 674 · Status: Kapanmış · 2016
Summary
The aim of this study is to adapt the Inventory of School Motivation (ISM) to the Turkish culture. There are 43 items, four dimensions and eight sub-dimensions in the inventory. After completing translation/re-translation process and getting expert reviews first phase of data collection period was completed by the participation of 554 Undergraduate students. The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed that the original factorial structure of the inventory is also valid for Turkish version for university students. Then, to check the criterion validity, the ISM, School Attitude Scale and General Self-Efficacy Scale were implemented together. 784 students were participated to the second data collection phase. The analysis of Structural equation modelling showed that there is a meaningful correlation between these three scales. So it can be said that the criterion validity of the ISM was met. Psychometric properties of the Turkish ISM were examined for high school and secondary school students also. However, the analysis results showed items were distributed to the different factors from the original scale. So it can be said that ISM was not valid for high school and secondary school samples. As a result, the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of ISM were valid for undergraduate students, but were not valid for the high and secondary school students. The ISM which was adapted to the Turkish culture at this study may contribute to the researches that aims to examine the motivations of students and variables that affect the motivation.
