The Effects of Different Decontamination Methods on the Cleaning and Surface Characteristics of Implant Healing Abutments

Project no. 32360 · Status: Kapanmış (Yayın bekleniyor) · 2024

Summary

Nowadays, dental implants are the most preferred method for the treatment of tooth loss. With the increasing number of implant procedures, the incidence of complications is also rising. One of the most critical criteria for the success of implant treatment is ensuring that the procedure is performed under sterile conditions and that the components used are properly sterilized. One such component is the healing abutments, which remain in the oral cavity after implant placement until the final prosthesis is delivered.

For economic, accessibility, and practicality reasons, the re-use of healing abutments after sterilization with different decontamination methods is a commonly adopted practice. However, in recent years, some studies have raised concerns, making this practice a subject of debate. There is currently no standardized or universally accepted sterilization protocol for healing abutments in the literature. Contaminants present on the surface of healing abutments can lead to various complications, the most significant being the risk of cross-infection between patients. Additionally, inflammation caused by these contaminants in the body may negatively impact implant success.

This study aims to investigate the cleaning efficacy of different decontamination protocols on implant healing abutments and the possible alterations in surface characteristics resulting from these protocols. For this purpose, four different decontamination protocols will be evaluated:

Autoclaving alone

Ultrasonication followed by autoclaving

Citric acid application in an ultrasonic bath followed by autoclaving

Sodium hypochlorite application in an ultrasonic bath followed by autoclaving

The ultimate goal of this study is to determine the most effective decontamination method and contribute to the existing literature.
